Leslie and Ruth have lived all their married life in Frankvilie, IA. They are members of the Frankvilie Presbyterian Church and both have served as Elders. Leslie was a 38 year employee of the Allamakee-Clayton Electric Cooperative in Postville. In his spare time he enjoyed hunting and fishing. Ruth worked at the Headington Grocery Store in Frankvilie.

Leslie died 9 Jan 1987 and is buried in the Frankvilie Cemetery, Winneshiek Co., IA. Ruth moved to Waukon in May 1994. She is now living in an apartment there.

Allen, Stephen and Marietta (Cole)

Stephen Allen was born 30 Sep 1825 and died 17 Jan 1897. He was the son of Herman Allen II (b. 1769) and Loretta Boardman (dates unknown). In 1846 Stephen married Marietta Cole (7 Feb 1825-28 Dec 1886). Both were born in Saratoga, NY As they traveled west to Iowa, they stopped enroute and rented a farm in Rockford, IL for 9 years.

While living in Illinois the Allens had 6 children: George, Edward, Ann Eliza, Franklin, Richard and Loretta. The latter two died at an early age. After they arrived in Iowa,they had: Irvin, Luella, Angenette, Elnora, Isaac, Fred, Lewis, and James (died at birth).

They purchased land from George Blake in Sec. 12, Bloomfield Twp., Winneshiek Co. The deed was dated 9 Feb 1854. The homestead was across the roadway from the Gideon Green farm. Stephen was the first white settler to tap sugar maple trees on this farm. Stephen and

Marietta lived on the farm until Marietta’s death when it was sold to Adam Cadlow.

The Allen’s children and descendants are: George (9 Dec 1846-25 Mar 1913) married Ora Ann Green. They had one son, Ward. Edward (30 Jul 1848-21 Oct 1912) married Melissa Cooley. They had 9 children: William, Charles, Steven, Ernest, George, Ray, Cora, Grace and Jennie. Ann Eliza (9 Apr 1850-2 Oct 1932) married Melvin Green. They had 4 children: Edward, Stephen, Carrie and Lester. The latter 2 died in infancy. Richard born 6 Dec 1851 and died 2 Sep 1853. Loretta born 26 Jan 1853 and died 2 Oct 1853. Franklin (11 Mar 1854-4 Nov 1911) married Susanne Banning. They had 4 children: Elva, Mary Etta, Ralph and Elmer. Irvin (15 Feb 1856- 9 Apr 1937) married Julie Garland. They had one daughter, Bessie. Luella (15 Mar 1857-27 Feb 1928) married Joseph Wietgenant. They had 2 children: Lorene and James. Anaenette (24 Mar 1859-5 Feb 1928) married James Kneeskern. They had 6 children: William, Freddie, Ruby, Leroy, Ida and James. Elnora (18 Jan 1862-15 Aug 1900) married E.L. Grandy. They had 2 sons. Isaac f4 Feb 1864-29 Nov 1924) married Lavina Albright. They had 7 children: Lynne, Mabel, Iva, Marie, Mildred, Ethel and Esther. Fred (14 Jun 1866-7 Feb 1899) married Barbara Kobriger. They had 3 children: Florence, Elizabeth and Mrs. Rima. Lewis (22 Mar 1868-21 Nov 1920) married Carrie Fish.

When Stephen Allen died in 1897, all 11 of his living children attended the funeral. Stephen and Marietta are buried in Centennial Cemetery, Bloomfield Twp.
